The semi-precious stone Amethyst is the birthstone of February. A variety of many forms of quartz that carries an spectacular purple colour range from a blend of deep violet, red to a lighter lilac hue.

The hardness of this gem makes it perfect for jewellery.
Some curious facts:
- The ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication,
- Ancient Egyptians employed it in antiquity for intaglio engraved gems.
- Anglican bishops wear an episcopal ring often set with an amethyst, an allusion to the description of the Apostles as “not drunk” at Pentecost in Acts 2:15
- Tibetans consider amethyst sacred to the Buddha and make prayer beads from it.

As you can see amethyst is a very popular and important gem throughout history! The best variety of amethyst are found in Siberia, Sri Lanka and Brazil but you don’t need to go all the way there because I have a beautiful selection available of rare cuts of Amethyst ready for a bespoke cocktail ring!
